Who Is Sola Sobowale?

Shola Sobowale, popularly known as Toyin Tomato or Oba, is a long-standing Nollywood actress, scriptwriter, and producer.

She has been in the movie industry since 1992, but she took a break between 2009 and 2016 to attend to personal and family needs.

Before Sola went on the break, she was famous for her role as Toyin Tomato in the television program Super Story that was titled ‘Oh Father, Oh Daughter’. 

Upon her return onscreen she gained prominence for her role as Eniola Salami A.K.A Oba in the 2018 Netflix Original Movie ‘King of Boys’

Personal Life (Early/recent)

Sola Sobowale is an indigene of Ondo, a Southwestern State in Nigeria. She was born December 26, 1963 to Mr and Mrs Olagookun.

Her parents were academicians. Her father Mr Joseph Olagookun is a retired principal, while her mother, Mrs Esther Olagookun was a headmistress.

Sola had her early years in Ondo State, where she had her primary and secondary education.

Upon completion of her secondary education, she proceeded to University of Ibadan to study Music. As a result of her passion for acting, she switched her course of study from Music to Theater Arts. 

Years later, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts from the University of Ibadan.

Sola is married to Oludotun Sobowale, a former corporate executive head at EKO Hospital, who leads a very quiet life.

The couple have five children together. A set of twins and three other children. Her twins Taiwo and Kehinde are Alumnus of Northampton University.

Taiwo studied Public Relations and Advertising while her twin sister studied Accounting and Finance. Kehinde is currently the financial controller at Ariadne Capital.

Career

Sola’s career as an actress did not start on a smooth note. After several auditions and recommendation from her Brother in-law, Tunji Oyelana.

She got her first role in the film ‘Sura the Tailor’. Followed by her roles in The Village Headmaster, Mirror in the Sun and Asewo To Re Mecca.

Most of these movies she was cast in was through the  Awada Kerikeri Group that was led by Adebayo Salami.

She became famous in 2001, for her role in Wale Adenuga’s television program Super Story titled ‘Oh Father, Oh Daughter’. Her role in the series earned her the name ‘Toyin Tomato’.

Since then, she has featured in over 40 English and Yoruba Films, Home videos and television series including Kosorogun, Billionaires’ Club, Dangerous Twins, Opin Iri Ajo, A Can of Worms and Travails of Fate.

In 2009, she relocated to England with her family to take care of her husband and children.

During the course of her stay in England, she cooked, swept and cleaned offices in London to make earnings.

She returned to Nigeria in 2016, after settling her children academically and career wise.

Upon her return to Nigeria, she was cast in the 2016 movies ‘Wives on Strike’, ‘The Wedding Party’ and in the television series ‘Hustle’.

Sola Sobowale gained fresh popularity for her character as Eniola Salami in the 2018 Netflix original movie ‘The King of Boys’. Her role in the movie earned her an award at the 2019 Africa Movie Academy Awards.
