Who Is Sim Shagaya?

Simdul Shagaya is a Nigerian entrepreneur and businessman renowned for founding uLesson online educational platform, Konga, DealDey, and E-Motion.

Person Life (Early/recent)

Sim Shagaya was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1975. He attended the Nigerian Military School, after which he served in the Nigerian Army.

Most of his education was in the United States. He completed his Bachelor’s degree education at George Washington University, USA.

Afterward, he earned a Masters of Engineering (M.Eng) degree from Dartmouth College, US. Sim also studied at Harvard Business School, which made him earn an MBA degree in 2003.

Simdul is married with children, although information on his spouse and children is currently undisclosed.

Career – A Great Founder

Sim Shagaya started his career as a banker at Rand Merchant Bank South Africa. He subsequently relocated to Nigeria, where he landed an offer as the head of Google Africa.

In November 2005, Sim established a billboard advertising business in Lagos, Nigeria, named E-Motion Advertising Limited.

He also created several websites but was unlucky, as they didn’t perform well. These websites include iNollyWood, Gbogbo, Jobclan, and Alarena.

In March 2011, Sim launched DealDey after convincing E-Motion’s board members to invest in his new business idea. It’s an online platform that offers discounted products and services.

On July 3, 2012, he established Konga with funding from Kinnevik AB, a Swedish investment company. At this time, he already had more than a decade of entrepreneurial and managerial experience.

In 2020, Sim Shagaya founded uLesson Education Limited, an online education platform for primary and secondary school students across Africa. Students rely on uLesson to prepare for JAMB, WAEC, NECO, BECE, and other exams.

uLesson has over 3.5 million app downloads, and over 10.6 million of its lessons have been watched.

Sim Shagaya recently founded Miva Open University, an online higher education institution for Nigerians. He is also the university’s chancellor.

Sim won the 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year Award by CNBC/All Africa Business Leaders Award in West Africa.

He also won the 2014 Leadership CEO of the Year Award by the Leadership Conference/Awards.

Moreover, Forbes listed him among The 10 Most Powerful Men in Africa in 2014.

Sim was also a member of the Economic Advisory Council of Plateau State, Nigeria, during the second gubernatorial term of Samuel Lalong, which ended on May 29, 2023.
