Who Is Sam Dede?

Samuel Dedetoku, popularly known as Sam Dede, is a Nollywood actor, politician, lecturer, and movie director. 

He has been in the movie industry for over 20 years and for those years he usually gets cast in thrilling roles either as a gang leader, police officer, captain or king.

He is also a lecturer in University of Port Harcourt, where he is referred to as Dr. Sam Dede.

Dr. Sam is the convener of ‘Kurukuru’, an African root renaissance roundtable that took place November 27, 2022 in The Creative Hub,Port Harcourt.

He is a member of Bikers In Nigeria and part of the organizers of Muscles on Wheels- MOWTRIX 2022, the exotic cars and power bikes festival that took place December 10 in Polo Club, GRA, Port Harcourt.

He is a brand ambassador for a few brands like Planet View Properties and he has over 203K followers on Instagram.

Personal Life (Early/recent)

Sam Dede is a native of Ogbodo, in Okirika Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria.

He was born November 30, 1965 in Lagos to Pa Dedetoku and Elsie Iyeng Inabaibo Abel Dedetoku

He attended Government Comprehensive Secondary School in Lagos. After which, he moved to Port Harcourt.

He has a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Theater Arts from the University of Port Harcourt.

In 2001, Sam married his heartthrob, Tammy, and they have four children together.


Sam Dede is one of the pioneers of Nollywood. His debut as an actor was in the 1997 movie, Blood Money.

He came to the limelight in 1999, after his role in ‘Ijele’. That same year he played a role in ‘Igodo’ and he was also cast as Ebube in ‘Issakaba’.

Before the modernization of the movie industry, he featured in lots of classic home videos like The Last Burial, Desperadoes, War Front, The Preacher, Paradise, etc.

In 2017, he featured as Afam in the Nigerian action thriller film, ‘In My Country’. 

His role in the movie earned him a nomination in the category of Best Actor in a Lead Role at the 2018 Africa Movie Academy Awards.

He was the main character in the 2021 Nigerian emotional drama film, ‘Gone’. Starring Stella Damascus, Gabriel Afolayan, and Bimbo Ademoye.

Apart from acting, Sam Dede is a senior lecturer in the department of Theater Arts in his alma mater, University of Port Harcourt.

He is also into politics, although he stated that he is not willing to leave acting for politics.

In 2012, he became the Director-General of the Rivers State Tourism Development Agency.
