Rod Smith is an American football player for the Vegas Vipers of the Exclusive Football League (XFL). He weighs 107 kg and he is 6 ft 3 in tall. His current playing position is running back.

Smith began his football playing career as a college athlete between 2011 and 2014 before proceeding to professional football in 2015.

Personal Life (Early/recent)

Rod Smith was born on January 10, 1992, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S. He attended Paul Harding High School, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During his time in high school, he took part in football, basketball and relay races.

In his senior year, he was named player of the year and he also received All-state honor as a senior.

College Career

In 2011, Rod Smith received a football scholarship to Ohio State University. During his freshman year, he took part in 10 games. 

He started out with an outstanding performance of 18 carries for 74 yards and one touchdown.

Rod Smith had his best college game during his sophomore year. It was a game against Penn State University.

In his senior year, he was the team goal-line running back, and he also took part in the special teams.

On October 27, 2014, he was sent out of the football team, due to a failed drug test. Shortly after, he declared for the NFL draft.

Professional Career 

Seattle Seahawks

On May 2, 2015, Rod Smith was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.

Months later, he was waived and moved to the practice squad on September 6. 

He returned to the active roster in October and on October 13, the Seattle Seahawks let him go.

Dallas Cowboys

On October 14, the Dallas Cowboys acquired him as a running back. He played in 10 games in the 2015 season, mostly appearing on special teams.

That same year, he scored his first professional touchdown on a 2-yard rush.

In 2018, he maintained his role as a special teams player.

New York Giants

On May 8, 2019, Rod Smith signed with the New York Giants. Three months later, he was placed on injured reserve 

Tennessee Titans

On October 8, 2019, Smith signed with the Tennessee Titans. He appeared on special teams and took part only in 3 games.

Oakland Raiders

On December 10, 2019, he was signed by the Oakland Raiders. He appeared in a few games before he re-signed a one-year contract with the team on March 25, 2020.

New York Giants (second stint)

Smith was signed to the training squad of the New York Giants on September 8, 2020.

Carolina Panthers

Rod Smith was signed by the Carolina Panthers on August 5, 2021, and he was waived on August 17, 2021.

Vegas Vipers

Rod Smith was selected by the Vegas Vipers in the 2023 Exclusive Football League (XFL) draft.

He appeared in nine regular season games leading the team with 70 carries for 274 yards. 

He also recorded two rushing touchdowns, 13 receptions for 116 yards and one receiving touchdown in the 2023 season.
