Who is Mike Afolarin?

Michael Oladapo Afolarin, popularly known as Mike Afolarin, is an actor, filmmaker, and an aerial photographer. He became famous for his lead role as ‘Ishaya Bello’ in the Netflix Original young adult series ‘Far From Home.’

Before then, he has played both lead and supporting roles in several movies and series. He has also produced and directed his own short films and a few movie projects.

Personal Life (Early/recent)

Mike Afolarin was born in Lagos on September 1, 1993, but grew up in Ibadan, living with his grandparents. He later returned to Lagos, where he completed his primary and secondary education.

He attended Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos State, for his secondary education. In 2016, he graduated from the University of Lagos with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

Career

Mike Afolarin started acting when he was called to act in a stage play during his university days. He began professional acting in 2013 at the Magic Time Play.

As he was passionate about storytelling, he worked as a filmmaker in the movie industry. He created short films ‘Peace’ and ‘An Interview Story’.

Mike worked behind the scenes of some movie projects and short films like ‘Ajuwaya’, ‘The 3rd Rule’, and ‘Couple of Days’ as an assistant director, set designer, and aerial photographer.

He collaborated with director Tolu ‘Lord Tanner’ in the Oyo State Investment Documentary Project as an Aerial Photographer in 2018.

Mike also played a lead role as ‘Chikodi,’ one of the four boys in the slum of the 2018 comedy-drama film, ‘Kasala.’

His role in Kasala brought him a breakthrough in the industry, as he began to get cast in many movies such as Miss Bamidele’s Girls, Soole, The Wait, Penance, The Accused, and We Tha Boyz.

He played a supporting character as ‘Effiong’ in the 2021 faith-based movie, ‘The Wait.’ Mike Afolarin featured alongside Ini Dima-Okojie, Chimezie Imo, and Nse Ikpe Etim.

That same year, he acted as an undercover cop, ‘Maxwell’ in ‘Soole,’ a comedy film produced by Adunni Ade.

Mike Afolarin was the lead actor in ‘Far From Home,’ the first Netflix Original young adult series coming out of Nigeria. He played the role of ‘Ishaya Bello,’ a talented artist and youngster from a poor home who desperately wanted to go to London to become the apprentice of a renowned international artist.

His role in the movie made him famous, as he worked alongside elite Nollywood stars. These include Richard Mofe-Damijo, Bimbo Akintola, Funke Akindele, Paul Adams, Adesua Etomi, and Deyemi Okanlawon.

He was nominated for the 2018 and 2020 Revelation of the Year-Male category Award by Bon Awards.
