The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the most popular Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion globally. Most Nigerian MMA fighters compete in the UFC, making a significant impact in the sport’s premier organization. In this article, I will show you a list of Nigerian fighters in UFC and briefly overview their biography, one after the other.

1. Israel Adesanya

  • A member of City Kickboxing, Auckland, New Zealand
  • Trainer: Eugene Bareman

Israel Adesanya started his MMA training with Eugene Bareman at City Kickboxing, Auckland, New Zealand. His wrestling trainer is Andrei Păuleț, who was formerly a Romanian New Zealander wrestling champion. Adesanya is an award-winning MMA fighter and is the recipient of the 2017 Fight of the Year award, fighting against Alex Pereira.

So far, he has won 27 professional matches of which he won 24.

2. Kamaru Usman

Kamarudeen Usman, nicknamed The Nigerian Nightmare, is a Nigerian-American professional MMA fighter who fights out of Denver, Colorado, USA. His trainer in grappling is Jorge Santiago, while Trevor Wittman trained him in striking.

He was won 20 MMA matches and lost four since his pro debut in 2012.

3. Jakiel Ayana

Jakiel Ayana is a MMA professional fighter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). At the time of writing this post, he has won five matches and lost two. He fights out of Lagos, Nigeria and is well-known in the UFC.

4. Cornel Thompson

Cornel Thompson, popularly known as The Marine Boxer, is also on our list of the Nigerian fighters in UFC. He has won seven professional matches and lost three since he started his fighting career.

He and Ugochukwu Melvin are the only fighters who have won the All Face Off Fight Night Series.

5. Anthony Njokuani

Anthony Njokuani is an American Nigerian MMA fighter who fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. He started his professional career as a kickboxer. As of now, he has won 18 matches and lost 14.

6. Andy Ologun

Andy Ologun is a famous Nigerian professional boxer, kickboxer, and MMA fighter. He fights out of Saitama, Japan and has won three games up to the present. His brother is Bobby Ologun, who is also a mixed martial artist.

7. Bobby Ologun

  • Fighting style: Kickboxing

Bobby Ologun has won three MMA matches and lost two since he started his career professionally. He fights out of Saitama, Japan, just like his brother, Andy. He is married to a Japanese, Kyoko Konda, and they have five children together.

8. Anestis Iyagbor

Anestis Iyagbor, also known as the Voodoo Child, is an MMA fighter in the UFC who fights out of Greece. As of now, he has won one match, but unfortunately lost two.

His won fights was against Konstantinos Skordoulis, while his loss fights was against Manuel Gaxhja and Anastasios Gulmetov, respectively.

9. Oluwale Bamgbose

Oluwale Bamgbose, also known as The Holy War Angel, is a Nigerian American Mixed Martial Artist that fights out of The Bronx, New York, United States. His fighting style include Shotokan Karate, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, and the Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

He has fought in ten matches of which he won six and lost four.

10. Sodiq Yusuff

  • A member of Team Lloyd Irvin

Sodiq Yusuff, also known as Super, is also inclusive of our well-curated list of Nigerian fighters in UFC. He is presently #13 in the UFC featherweight rankings.

Yusuff is a Blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Lloyd Irvin Jr. He fights out of Camp Springs, Maryland, USA, and has fought in 16 matches of which he won 13.

11. Mohammed Usman

  • A member of Fortis MMA

Mohammed Usman, nicknamed The Motor, is one of Nigeria’s Mixed Martial Artists and heavyweight champions. As of now, he has fought in 13 UFC matches of which he won 11 and lost two.

His opponents in these matches include Jake Collier, Junior Tafa, Zac Pauga, Eduardo Perez, Brandon Sayles, Terrance Hodges, Reggie Cato, Alexis Garcia, Frank Tate, Don’Tale Mayes, Dante Harrell, Van Michael Palacio, and Derrick Williams.

12. Kennedy Nzechukwu

  • A member of Fortis MMA

Kennedy Nzechukwu, nicknamed African Savage, is a Nigerian pro MMA fighter that fights out of Dallas, Texas, US. He has won 12 matches and lost four so far. His mother brought him to Fortis MMA, which marked the beginning of his MMA training in 2015.

13. Hakeem Dawodu

Hakeem Dawodu, also known as Mean, is a Canadian mixed martial artist, currently fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) matches out of Calgary, Alberta. His fighting style is Muay Thai and Kickboxing.

As of now, he has won nine MMA matches, of which seven wee by knockout.
