Who Is John Dumelo?

John Dumelo is an actor well-known in the Nollywood and Ghanaian movie industry. He is also a politician, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Dumelo is one of the old faces in the movie industry and has been around since films were only on cassette and disk. He has featured in over 115 movies.

Personal Life (Early/recent)

John Dumelo was born in Accra, Ghana, on February 3, 1984. He is the last child and only son of his parents, John and Antoinette Dumelo.

His dad was a civil engineer, while his mum worked as a customs officer.

His primary education was at Christ the King School, Accra, and his secondary school was Achimota Senior High School, Ghana.

After completing his secondary education, he attended Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

He also studied at GIMPA’s School of Public Service and Governance.

John has been married for over five years to Gifty Mawunya Nkornu, and they have two children together, John and Mali Dumelo.


John Dumelo had his first role in the movie industry while in primary school. He played the role of a school kid in the 1991 movie ‘Baby Thief’ at the age of 7.

His first role as a professional actor was in 2007 when he was featured as Collins in the home video ‘Keziah.’

Since then, he has been on screen playing different roles as a pioneer actor in many home videos, as Spark in Forever Young, Jason in A Private Storm, Ben in Power of a Kiss, Charles in Secret Shadows, Love Alone, etc.

He played the lead role as ‘James Foster’ in the 2013 film ‘One Night in Vegas.’

The following year, he was featured alongside Joselyn Dumas, Christabel Ekeh, and Nana Mensah in the movie ‘Love or Something Like That.’

In 2018, he starred alongside Nneka J. Adams, Ene Jane Adoyi, Toosweet Annan, and Clara Adjoa Asantuwa in the movie ‘Black Men Rock;’

That same year, he got his first role in a TV series titled ’40 and Single’.

Apart from acting, John Dumelo is also very active in Ghanaian Politics under the National Democratic Congress (NDC Party). Due to his dedication and loyalty to the party, the former president of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, made him the Director of Operations for the youth group of the National Democratic Congress in 2016.

In 2020, he contested as a parliamentary candidate representing the NDC in Ayawaso West Wougon Constituency, which he lost to Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

John Dumelo is very dynamic, as he runs several business ventures.

In 2012, he launched his clothing line called ‘J.Melo.’ 

He is also known to be involved in farming as a foodstuff and livestock farmer.
