Houston Roughnecks is one of the eight teams that make up the Exclusive Football League (XFL). They are a professional football team based in Houston, Texas in the United States of America.

The team was created in 2018 and they have their home games at TDECU Stadium.

As at 2018, they were in the west division, but currently they are based in the south division.

The official team colors of the Roughnecks are Red, Navy and Grey.

Houston Roughnecks (along with the DC Guardians) have the highest win percentage among all existing XFL teams.


In 2018, Houston joined Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, DC and three other cities as an Exclusive Football League operated area.

On May 20, 2019, XFL confirmed the employment of June Jones as Houston Roughnecks’ head coach.

June Jones was a part of Hamilton Tiger-Cats team, until he quit May 13, 2019 to take up the position of head coach at Houston.

The first player of the team was  P. J. Walker, a former Quarterback player for Temple Owls.

Walker was signed and announced by Houston Roughnecks on October 15, 2019

The Roughnecks started out well, by defeating the Los Angeles Wildcats by a score of 37-17 on February 8, 2020.

Shortly after, XFL notified the public of the cancellation of the remaining 2020 XFL season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On April 10, 2020, the XFL halted all activities and suspended operations, so Houston Roughnecks finished with an undefeated 5-0 record.

Houston Roughnecks New Era 

XFL was purchased by RedBird Capital Partners, Johnson and Garcia in August 2020 after its former owner McMahon filed for bankruptcy.

Two years later, the return of Houston XFL was confirmed and on April 13, 2022 Wade Phillips was hired as head coach.

Six months later, the XFL announced that the Houston Roughnecks would adopt a new logo on October 31.

Houston Roughnecks have over 103 players on their team. 

A few of their notable players are Connor Cook, Kony Ealy, Sean Davis, Kaleb Eleby, Alex Mollette and Tavante Beckett.

They have about 20 players on their reserve list including Jayson Ademilola, Austin Ajiake, Isaiah Bowser and Benjie Johnson, Joshua Kalu.

Houston Roughnecks have one of the highest win percentages among all current XFL teams.

They won 62.5%, lost 12.5% and had a 25% tie in their overall regular season games. 

The Roughnecks won against San Antonio Brahmas, Vegas Vipers and Orlando Guardians by 2-0.

The team also won against Arlington Renegades by 3-0 and Los Angeles Wildcats by 1-0. 

Houston Roughnecks had a tie of 1-1 with Seattle Sea Dragons and St. Louis Battlehawks and they lost to DC Defenders by 0-1.
