What Is Hilda’s Cookathon?

Hilda’s Cookathon is a successful attempt by a Nigerian chef, restauranteur, and actress to be recognized as the Guinness World Record holder for the longest time spent cooking.

The record was previously held by an Indian chef known as Lata Tondon, whose marathon cooking lasted for 87 hours, 45 minutes in 2019.

Hilda Effiong Bassey, aka Hilda Baci, hosted this very Cookathon. She’s an alumnus of Madonna University, Okija, Rivers State, from which she earned a Bachelor’s degree in sociology.

Many personalities visited her at the venue to encourage her strength and dedication, including;

  • Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu
  • Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Center, Lagos, Pastor Bolaji Idowu
  • Nigerian celebrities: Skiibii, Tiwa Savage, Tim Godfrey, Teni, Charles Okocha, Spyro, Dremo, etc

Moreover, Yemi Osinbajo, the former Vice President of Nigeria, called to encourage her.

Hilda got vast support and grew her fan base from Nigerians who cheered her up and those who never stopped sharing videos of her cooking.

Guinness World Record – Hilda’s Attempt

In March 2023, Hilda Baci announced on social media that she wanted to attempt to break the current cooking marathon record for the Guinness World Record (GWR).

On May 11, 2023, she started the Cook-a-thon and cooked for 100 hours, against her initial plan of 96 hours. The marathon lasted four days and ended on May 15, 2023, at 7:45 am.

Subsequently, GWR reviewed videos and other proof but deducted about 7 hours from the 100 hours. The reason was that she unknowingly rested for a few more minutes during one of her rest breaks.

On June 13, 2023, the Guinness World Record verified Hilda’s Cookathon and announced her as the new holder of the world’s longest marathon cooking.

However, she may only hold this new record for a short time as other chefs in Nigeria and Kenya are on attempts to set new records.

Hilda Baci was thoughtful to consider that she could be the next Guinness World Record holder since Lata Tondon set the previous record in 2019.

Hilda’s Cookathon has sparked a lot of motivation among other chefs in Nigeria to set a new record for GWR’s longest cooking marathon. Her attempt motivated Chef Dammy, who cooked for 120 hours but didn’t get GWR’s consideration, as she didn’t apply before undertaking the challenge. Surprisingly, she has announced another attempt to cook for 150 hours.

Despite all, Hilda remains the current GWR Cook-athon holder, and no one has yet been announced to break her record.
