Inspired by the local high school team, the Swanton Bulldogs, Oakes developed a passion for the sport. This is how he started honing his skills at an early age.

While in high school, he became a dominant football player, earning first-team all-state honors as a senior. Oakes was also a standout basketball and baseball player, and he was named to the All-Ohio first team in both sports.

During Oakes’s freshman season, he caught 12 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Oakes continued to improve in his sophomore and junior seasons, and he was named to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) All-Honorable Mention team in 2020 and 2021.

His senior season was a breakout year. He led the MAC in receptions (56) and receiving yards (621), and he also scored two touchdowns. Oakes’ impressive performance earned him first-team All-MAC honors and the MAC Tight End of the Year award.
