Who Is Giannis Antetokounmpo?

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Nigerian born Greek professional basketball player who became the first player in NBA history to finish a regular season in the top 20 in all five statistics of total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, in 2019 & 2022, won consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player Awards. He joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to have won two MVP awards before turning 26.

Personal Life (Early/recent)

Giannis was born in Athens, Greece after his dad and mum migrated from Nigeria. Prior to migrating to Greece, Giannis’ father was a professional football player in Nigeria, while his mother was a high jumper. After migrating to Greece, Giannis’ mother Veronica worked as a babysitter while his father, Charles, worked as a handyman to raise him and his four (4) other brothers.

Giannis and his brothers started out playing football in Greece, however, when a local basketball coach, Spiros Velliniatis, spotted 13-year-old Giannis’ physical potential, he convinced his mother, Veronica, to let him try his hands at basketball.

Years later, Giannis found himself playing for Greek second-division side Filathlitikos. In December 2012, Giannis signed a four-year deal with Spanish club CAI Zaragoza.

This deal reportedly including NBA buyouts after each season, and a year later, On April 28, 2013, Antetokounmpo officially made himself eligible for the 2013 NBA draft. He then fulfilled his draft projections as a first-round pick by being selected 15th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. And then went on to sign a contract with the bucks.

  • In the 16/17 NBA season, Giannis became the first player in NBA history to finish a regular season in the top 20 in all five statistics of total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo, in 2019 & 2022, won consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player Awards. He joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to have won two MVP awards before turning 26.
  • He helped the Bucks win their first NBA championship title since 1971, in 2021. He was named MVP in the same season.
