Who is Donald Payne?

Donald Payne is an American football player for the Arlington Renegades of the Exclusive Football League.

He began his career as a College athlete at Stetson University. He was named the 2013 Pioneer Football League Defensive Freshman of the Year in his first year on the team.

After that, he won over five awards between 2014 and 2023, including the 2014 NCAA Tackles Leader, the 2022 USFL Tackles Leader, and many more.

Early Life

Donald Payne was born July 12, 1994, in Fayetteville, Georgia, United States. He attended Landmark Christian School in Fairburn, Georgia.

Upon completion of his high school education, he proceeded to Stetson University where he began his athletic career.

Career

Donald Payne attended Stetson University between 2013 and 2016 and was a part of their football team.

In his sophomore year, Donald led the whole National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) with a total of 185 tackles.

At the end of his college career, he had garnered several recognitions and records, including;

  • 538 career tackles, 14 sacks and 9nineinterceptions during his collegiate career
  • A three-time All-American and a three-time Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Year.

Professional Career

Donald Payne has played in 9 American football teams since his first pick in 2017.

On May 5, 2017, Donald signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. Four months later, he was waived on September 2.

On September 3, 2017, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed him. He finished the 2017 season third in the National Football League in special teams tackles with 16.

On August 16, 2019, Donald signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Shortly after, he was waived.

In 2019, Donald had a second stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars, this time he took part in nine games.

He finished the season with an outstanding record of 61 tackles, a sack, a pass defense and a fumble recovery.

On July 28, 2020, Donald Payne signed with the Washington Football Team. On October 26, he returned to take part in active games.

The Miami Dolphins signed him into their practice squad on November 11, 2020. The team subsequently released him on November 23, 2020.

He signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers, but he was waived a few days after.

The Arlington Renegades chose Donald in the third round of the Exclusive Football League 2023 supplementary picks.

Recognitions

  • 2013 – named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Freshman of the Year 2013
  • 2014 – won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tackle Leaders.
  • 2014 and 2016 – won FCS All-American and PFL Defensive Player of the Year 3 times
  • 2022 – won the All-USFL and USFL tackles leader award.
  • 2023 – won the XFL championship award.
