About DC Defenders

The DC Defenders are a professional American football team based in Washington, DC. The team plays under a minor football league, XFL that is run by RedBird Capital Partners.

The Defenders play their home games at Audi Field, Washington, DC and they have their official team colors as Red and White.

DC Guardians(along with the Houston Roughnecks) have the highest win percentage among all existing XFL teams.

DC Defenders

History

On December 5, 2018 Washington, DC was selected as one of the cities to join the Exclusive Football League XFL.

In February 2021 the league employed Pep Hamilton, as the head coach and general manager of their DC team.

The team name was revealed as DC Defenders on August 21,2019, the team logo was also unveiled on the same day 

The first player that was signed by the DC Defenders was Cardale Jones, a former quarterback at Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Defenders won the first game in the 2020 XFL season by defeating the Seattle Dragons with a score of 31–19.

On March 12, 2020, the XFL notified the public that the remainder of the 2020 season had been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the course of the pandemic, the XFL was sold to RedBird Capital Partners, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia.

In March, 2022, Reggie Barlow was hired as the new head coach of the Defenders. His hire was confirmed on April 13.

The return of the Defenders was official on July 24 and they returned with a new logo in October 2022

Some of their notable players include  D’Eriq King, Artavis Pierce, Jazz Ferguson, Davin Bellamy, Kentrell Brice and Matt Elam.

Four of their team members plays for the National Football League (NFL). Their names and NFL teams includes;

One of their quarterback, Jordan Ta’amu won the XFL offensive player of the year award in 2023

DC Defenders

Championships

The DC Defenders won the 2023 North Division Championship Games.

In the final game of the North Division match, they played against the Seattle Sea Dragons at the Audi Field.

The Defenders won against the Seattle Sea Dragons with a score of 37-21, so they emerged the overall winner of the season.

Opponents 

DC Defenders have one of the highest win percentages among all their opponents in the XFL

The team has a 62.5% win, 12.5% loss and a 25% tie score at the 2023 regular season games 

The Defenders won against Seattle Sea Dragons and St. Louis Battlehawks by 3-0.

They also finished victorious in their games against San Antonio Brahmas and Houston Roughnecks by 1-0 and against Vegas Vipers by 2-1.

The team had a tie of 1-1 in their games with Orlando Guardians and Arlington Renegades.

They lost to the Los Angeles Wildcats by 0-1.

Records

DC Defenders had some notable records in their 2023 season

  • 594 receiving yards by Chris Blair

Their coach emerged as the overall winner of the 2023 XFL Coach of the Year award.
