His family was distressed by the ongoing civil war in Ethiopia. Pillow and Kwot Omot, his parent alongside his elder brother Aba, embarked on a perilous 440-mile trek to the Kenyan border, seeking a chance for a better life. Thankfully, the refugee camp offered them little solace.
Crowded with limited resources and constant uncertainty, it was a harsh environment for the young family. Yet, amidst the hardship, B.J. Omot’s family became his anchor.
His mother worked tirelessly, holding down two jobs to support the family. Aba, B.J.’s elder brother, became his protector and confidante, filling the void left by their father, who was denied entry to the United States due to medical reasons.
Despite the challenges, B.J. Omot’s childhood was not devoid of joy. He found solace in sports, initially excelling in football and soccer. However, a growth spurt and a nudge from his brother led him to discover his true passion: basketball.
In 1996, a beacon of hope emerged. The country granted B.J. Omot’s mother and siblings entry into the United States. They settled down in Minnesota with the help of the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.

B.J. Omot’s teenage years were a whirlwind of cultural adaptation, navigating a new language and way of life. But basketball remained his constant.
He honed his skills on the courts of Mahtomedi High School. His talent blossomed under the guidance of coaches and teammates.
B.J. Omot’s junior year had a turning point, earning him a spot on the varsity team. By his senior year, he had become indispensable and indomitable on the court, averaging 18 points, six rebounds, and 2 assists.
His dedication and talent earned him recognition, as well as opened doors for collegiate opportunities. B.J.’s journey to the University of North Dakota was a testament to his family’s unwavering support.
He became an important contributor to the team’s offense, averaging 16.5 points per game in his sophomore season (2023-2024) while showcasing his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities.
