Who Is Alex Ekubo?

Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke, popularly known as Alex Ekubo, is an award winning Nollywood actor, film producer, and model.

He started out as a model before transiting into the movie industry, since then, he has featured in over 100 movies some of which includes The Escort, Accidental Affair, Bitter Rain and Zero Hour

Alex is also a nature lover, he is a member of Eco Restoration Foundation and he recently participated in the International Coastal Cleanup Day at the Meiyagun beach estate.

Personal Life (Early/recent)

Alex Ekubo is an indigene of Arochkwu, Abia State, Nigeria. He was born April 10, 1986 in Port Harcourt. He is the second of four children born to Mr and Mrs Ekubo. 

His mom Mrs Jane Ekubo is a fashion designer while his father Maxi Alex Ekubo is a petroleum marketer. The name of his siblings are Amarachi, Chioma and Michael Ekubo.

Due to the nature of his father’s job, Alex grew up in several cities like Katsina, Port Harcourt, Kano and Lagos.

He attended K.Kotun Primary School, Lagos and Federal Government College, Daura, Katsina for his primary and secondary education respectively.

As regards his higher education, he enrolled in the University of Calabar, where he obtained a diploma in Mass Communication. 

After which he proceeded to study law in the same University. In 2008, he graduated with Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B).

In 2015, Alex returned to University of Calabar to study Theater Arts.

He was engaged to an American born model, Fancy Acholonu. They announced their wedding May 10, 2021, but his fiancée called off the engagement in August of the same year.

Career

Alex Ekubo began his walk to stardom when he finished as the 1st Runner Up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria Pageant. This brought him recognition and an opportunity to kickstart his acting career 

His debut in the movie industry was in 2005 with a small role in ‘Sinners in the House’. His first major role was as Andre Dikeh in ‘Weekend Getaway’.

In 2013, he featured as ‘Jay-Jay’ in Ayo Makun’s television series ‘AY’s Crib’. The following year, he appeared as a video model in Yemi Alade’s music video titled ‘Johnny’.

He played the lead role as Tony Bello in the 2017 Nollywood movie ‘Catch.er’, alongside Blossom Chukwujekwu, Beverly Naya, OC Ukeje and Omowunmi Dada.

He played the main character with Frank Donga, in the 2020 action heist film ‘Soft Work’. The movie also starred Akin Lewis, Shaffy Bello, Sanni Mu’azu and IK Ogbonna.

Recently, he was cast as lead and supporting character in award winning movies like ‘Peace, Be Still’, ‘A Sunday Affair’, ‘Almajiri’, ‘Tiger’s Tail’, ‘The Blood Covenant’ and ‘The American King as Told by an African Priestess’.

He is the main actor alongside Nancy Isime in the unreleased movie ‘Drink’. It is set to be in Cinemas from December 8, 2023.
